Gachagua Hits Back at Ruto Over Sifuna's Born-Again Remarks

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hit back at President William Ruto following his remarks questioning whether Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was born again.

Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), appeared to turn Ruto's comments against him, suggesting that Kenyans should remember the political promises made during the 2022 General Election.

Speaking in Kikuyu, Gachagua referenced Ruto's remarks about Sifuna's religious standing, arguing that the President was now engaging in church activities despite previously being presented as a leader who could not deceive Kenyans.

“Marauga Sifuna atĩ ti mũhonoku. Tũririkane tũgĩthura Ruto twaugaga mũndũ mũhonoku ndangĩtũhenia. Ũcio mũhonoku nĩwe ũrahũra kanitha kahinda-inĩ gaka,” Gachagua said.

The former Deputy President appeared to use the exchange to question Ruto's political credibility, drawing attention to what he portrayed as a contrast between the President's current church engagements and the promises he made while seeking votes in 2022.

His remarks add another dimension to the growing political exchanges between Ruto and opposition leaders as the country moves towards the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua has increasingly used public rallies and media interviews to challenge the President's leadership while positioning DCP within the broader opposition political movement.

The exchange involving Sifuna also highlights how religion and questions of personal conviction are increasingly featuring in political discussions ahead of the next General Election.
