Gachagua Rules Out Endorsing Presidential Candidate Without Proper Agreement Ahead of 2027

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared that the Mt Kenya region will not automatically endorse any presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election without first reaching an agreement on its political interests.

Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), said the region would not support a presidential candidate simply because other political players had agreed on a particular political arrangement.

Speaking in Kikuyu during a political address, Gachagua insisted that Mt Kenya leaders and voters would carefully consider their political options before deciding whom to support in the 2027 presidential contest.

“Ithuĩ ta mũng’ethanĩro tũtingĩtangatha mũndũ ũrĩa tũkarirũkia kĩhĩtahĩtano-inĩ kĩa Ũpresident 2027…No tene! Tũrathaka kandi ciitũ na ũgĩ,” Gachagua said.

The DCP leader's remarks signal his insistence that the region's political support should be guided by consultations and an understanding of its interests rather than automatic alignment with another political formation.

His statement also comes amid growing discussions about possible Opposition alliances and negotiations ahead of the 2027 elections.

Gachagua has repeatedly called for Mt Kenya unity while maintaining that the region should have a voice in determining the direction of any political coalition it joins.

The question of presidential endorsements, coalition negotiations and the region's bargaining position is expected to feature prominently as political parties begin preparing for the 2027 General Election.
